Here is some properly formatted guitar tablature:

e|------------------|-----------------|------------------|
B|--------5h7p5-----|---------------8-|-7-7-7-7-7/5\7----|
G|-----6------------|------6h7p6-7-9--|--9-7-6-------7-4-|
D|-7-9--7------9-6--|-4/6/7-----------|--------9---------|
A|------------------|-----------------|------------------|
E|------------------|-----------------|------------------|

Why is that properly formatted?

  1. Modifiers (i.e., slides, pull-offs) are not broken up. 9h11p9 = good. 9h--11p-9 = bad.
  2. There are only 6 lines of tab. No empty lines, no breaks, just 6 lines of tab in a row.
  3. It is not exceedingly long. (Usually, this means 3 bars or less).
  4. It is not interspersed with chords or lyrics. It is just a piece of tab.
  5. It is in standard tuning. (All tab is assumed to be in standard tuning - you don't need to indicate it).
  6. Notes are separated by some space. 5-5-5-5-5 = good. 55555 = bad.
  7. It only uses modifiers from the list below.

List of Supported Modifiers:
Hammer-on: h
Pull-off: p
Slide-up: /
Slide-down: \
Bend: b

How do I use the max fret and max fret span options?

  1. Max fret is the maximum fret you would like the tab to reach. The resulting tab will never exceed this limit.
  2. Max fret span is the most you would like to stretch your hand in the resulting tab. The less you're willing to stretch your hand, the more you'll have to reposition it (and vice versa).
  3. Split chords decides whether or not to put muted strings in the middle of your chords. Usually, you don't want this, but sometimes with fingerpicking or jazz chords it's useful.

Where can I find guitar tab?

There are a variety of websites that give away free guitar tablature. I'd recommend ultimate-guitar.com.
